Pediatric Care
Dr. Rachel Fazio is an Optometrist at Riemer Eye Center. She provides comprehensive eye care including pediatrics, contact lens fittings, and treatment/management of ocular disease. Dr. Fazio received her Doctor of Optometry from Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan and Bachelor of Vision Science also from Ferris State University.
Primary Care
He is excited and appreciative to be serving patients in the area where he grew up. He prides himself on excellent patient care and great customer service. His experience stems from his time as an extern with Riemer Eye Center where he specialized in primary care, ocular disease, pediatrics and contact lenses.
Emergency Care
This is a true eye emergency. Unless this type of glaucoma is treated quickly, blindness can result. Symptoms of acute angle-closure glaucoma attack may include; blurred vision, severe eye pain, head ache, nausea and vomiting. If you have any of these symptoms call your eye doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease that occurs when the pressure within the eye increases, and causes damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain. When damage occurs, blind spots in the peripheral (outer) vision occur. These blind spots are usually not noticeable until there is significant damage to the optic nerve and damage to the nerve is irreversible. If the entire optic nerve is destroyed, blindness results, but Glaucoma can be prevented with early detection and treatment.
Ophthalmology
In addition to board certification, Dr. Riemer was selected as Director of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic Health System, has won first place research award from the Consortium of Osteopathic Residencies in Ophthalmology, Chief Resident at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has been an associate professor at Michigan State University.
Macular Degeneration
Genetic changes appear to be responsible for nearly half of the individuals who developed macular degeneration. In addition, macular degeneration is part of the body’s natural aging process. One large research study found that the risk of getting macular degeneration increases from about 2 percent of people in their 50s to nearly 30 percent in people over age 75.

Children with uncorrected vision conditions or eye health problems face many barriers in life, academically, socially, and athletically. Proper eye care can enable your child to reach their highest potential. It is recommended that all children have their eyes checked before they start school. Remember that children do not yet know good or bad vision. If there is a family history of misaligned eyes, childhood cataracts or a serious eye disease an ophthalmologist should examine the child.
Cataract Surgery
An intraocular lens or IOL is a clear, artificial lens that is implanted into the eye during cataract surgery. There are different types of lenses to choose from, and the choice may be based on the type of vision a patient chooses or cost of the lens.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common eye disease among people with diabetes. It occurs when the blood vessels in the retina change. These vessels swell and leak fluid or may close off completely. In some cases, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. People with diabetic retinopathy often don’t notice changes in their vision in the early stages of the disease. As it progresses, diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss that in many cases can not be reversed. It usually affects both eyes.

Botox
BOTOX® is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified substance produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large amounts, this substance blocks the nerve impulses to muscles, causing a temporary form of paralysis. By using extremely small doses of BOTOX®, injected directly into a specific muscle, only the activity of that specific muscle will be paralyzed. Therefore, the problem that muscle causes, like a twitch, spasm or frown line is stopped.
