Identifying dental problems as early as possible is important. There are several factors that come into play at a young age that might increase treatment needed, or make a remedy even possible: loss of food while eating; eats hay before his grain; grain in water bucket; difficulty chewing or excess salivation; loss of body condition; large undigested food particles in manure larger than one quarter inch; head tilting or tossing; bit chewing; tongue lolling; tries to rear while bridling; fighting the bit or resisting the bridal; bucking or failing to stop or turn; foul odor from the mouth or nostrils; traces of blood in the mouth; or nasal discharge or swelling of the face. Other horses may not show noticeable signs, because they just simply adapt to their discomfort.

Vaccination
I generally approach vaccination strategies based upon the risk of your horse contracting the disease and the eventual effect or consequence of that particular disease. The following recommendations are for a mature non-pregnant, pleasure horse.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Emergencies consist of but are not limited to: lacerations, colic, acute lameness, foaling issues, neurologic issues, eye problems, choke, and systemic illness. While the above are recommendations concerning when to call, your judgment is best and if you are at all concerned please do not hesitate to call.
Behavioral Counseling
Horses need regular preventive dental maintenance every six months to one year. Unlike people, horses' teeth have an eruption rate of two-three mm per year. The teeth should wear in correspondence to yearly eruption rate. Malocclusions, or improper position of the teeth, can lead to many health issues and behavioral problems.
Nutritional Counseling
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is a viral infection that manifests itself in one of three clinical syndromes: acute infection, chronic infection, or inapparent carrier. Acutely infected horses show fever, lethargy, and anorexia as well as the hematologic abnormalities of thrombocytopenia and potentially anemia within 30 days of exposure. Horses that are chronically infected have the classic signs of recurrent fever, weight loss, ventral edema, and anemia.
Comprehensive Examination
Geriatric care - Aged horses can have sub-clinical health care issues that can be identified and treated before they become a problem. If your horse is over 15 years of age we recommend a complete physical examination and blood testing to establish baseline values.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Internal parasites have long been labeled ‘silent killers’. Much of the time extensive internal damage is occurring without owners even being aware their horses are infected. Consequences of parasitic infection included: robbing your horse of vital nutrients, causing gastrointestinal irritation, unthriftiness, colic, intestinal rupture, and even death.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Allergy testing/hyposesitization - skin testing is considered the gold standard by most allergists in the United States. Blood test results do not correlate well to skin test results. In our practice skin testing is the method of choice to diagnose and treat skin and respiratory allergies in the horse.

Wound and Fracture Care
Tetanus is a disease caused by toxins produced by the bacteria clostridium tetani. This bacteria is assumed to be ever present in the environment.Bacterial spores proliferate in tissue that lack oxygen. That is why puncture wounds are an obvious concern. Horses are highly susceptible to tetanus and can die from the disease. Vaccination is recommended once a year.

Laboratory Services
No specific antiviral therapy for EIA is available at this time. Horses that are infected are prohibited from interstate travel unless going back to the farm of origin (these horses must be under strict quarantine), going to slaughter, or to a diagnostic laboratory or approved research facility.

I enjoy all aspects of equine veterinary medicine and I have a strong interest in areas of equine lameness diagnosis and treatment as well as equine dentistry. I enjoy developing lasting relationships with my clients and their horses. I truly love being an equine veterinarian and could not imagine doing anything else.
