Ear Infections
Swimmers ear usually occurs in children or young adults who have been exposed to water. Oftentimes, if a child goes swimming and water is trapped in the ear bacteria usually mixed with the water in the ear canal and usually form a localized infection in the skin of the ear canal. This can be quite painful and lead to ear pain, ear swelling, ear drainage, and hearing loss. Oftentimes, a specialist needs to vacuum out the ear and usually place a wick in the ear canal so that the patient can have immediate relief from the pain and swelling. Oral antibiotics have no place in the treatment of an external ear infection. 99% of all external ear infections respond to the placement of topical antibiotic eardrops on an ear wick. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Adenoids are a mass of lymphoid tissue situated on the posterior wall of the nasal cavity where the nose bends into the throat. Please see picture. Normally in children, they make a soft mound in the roof or posterior wall of the nasopharynx just above and behind the uvula. However, in many children enlargement or chronic infection of the adenoids leads to snoring, tossing and turning, pauses in breathing, waking up frequently at night, sleep walking, sleep talking, grinding of the teeth, nighttime cough, and hard to get up in the morning along with bed wetting. In younger children, you can see dark circles around the eyes, hyperactive behavior, poor attention span, slow growth, lack of weight gain, frequent allergy, cold, and sinus symptoms, problems swallowing. foods, sore throats, nasal speech, and frequent doctor visits. It is not uncommon to see asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and ADHD symptoms. In older children, you can see that the children have exercise intolerance that leads to the children being overweight and these are children over the age of 6. They are irritable, they are depressed, they are sleepy in class, and they lie around and avoid strenuous activity. They too have frequent runny nose, congestion, sinus, open mouth appearance, snoring, and a lot of the symptoms you see in younger children. It is not unusual to see nosebleeds and ear infections with the children getting frequently sick, but not responding to medication. For these children, the removal of the adenoids is a simple 7-minute outpatient surgical procedure. Ultrasound
Neck masses in children come in all shapes, sizes, and locations. 99% of the time these masses are benign and represent infections, enlarged lymph nodes, abscesses, or cysts. It is essential that a thorough history and physical be obtained by a ear, nose, and throat surgeon to determine the likelihood of the nature of the neck mass and what can be expected in the future for such a neck mass. Thorough history and physical and diagnostic tests including laboratory work and possibly ultrasound or CAT scan may be necessary to determine the nature of the neck mass. Depending on a particular neck mass, oftentimes the removal of these neck masses can be performed in an outpatient surgical center under anesthesia and take less than 15-20 minutes to perform. If this is a simple removal of a neck mass, a board-certified pathologist will often look at the tissue to determine the nature of the mass. Depending on the nature of the mass, healing typically takes place in less than two weeks. Postoperative recovery at our facility is usually less than 30 minutes and access to the operating surgeon is by close follow up. General Surgery
He did a general surgery internship at the Medical College of Georgia from 1981-1982. After his internship, he completed a residency in otolaryngology at the Medical College of Georgia from 1982-1986. He completed his residency in general otolaryngology and moved to Statesboro, Georgia where he has lived for the last 25 years. Dr. Crews has a special interest in pediatric ear, nose, and throat problems and opened the Statesboro ENT Surgical Center in 2000.
Otolaryngology

Lesions
Oftentimes, children have hoarseness that can be quite pronounced and quite prolonged in its course. If a child has hoarseness for longer than 60 days, they should probably be evaluated by an ear, nose, and throat doctor. If the child has dysphonia or hoarseness for longer than 60 days and the child is known to be a vocal abuser or one that raises his voice, often a period of vocal rest is necessary. If the problem has been since birth and the problem has been prolonged, oftentimes the child will have to be examined under anesthesia with a lighted tube called a laryngoscope. The actual surgery itself is called a laryngoscopy and oftentimes a microscope is used to examine the small vocal cords and any lesions that may occur on the vocal cords. Congenital problems can occur in which the vocal cords are webbed together. Vocal cords can also have small lesions on them called vocal nodules or vocal polyps. Viruses can cause papillomas on the child's vocal cords leading to breathing disorders. In any event, the child should be evaluated by a board-certified ear, nose, and throat doctor. Oftentimes, the procedure to diagnose the problem can be performed in an outpatient surgical center at the Pediatric Ear, Nose, & Throat Center. We have been diagnosing and treating children for over 25 years with chronic hoarseness and vocal cord issues.
