University Hospital is SUNY Upstate Medical University’s primary medical care facility, and with over 9,000 employees is an essential component of the Onondaga County economy. Upstate provides extensive healthcare services and as the region’s only Level-1 trauma center has cared for the some of the most seriously ill and injured in New York State. Upstate facilities include the Golisano Children’s Hospital – the only pediatric intensive care unit in a 17-county referral area, Upstate Cancer Center, Upstate Breast Care Center, Upstate Heart and Vascular Center, and the Joslin Diabetes Center – a NYS Center of Excellence and level-4 Epilepsy Clinic, the highest designation possible. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Opened in 2014, the Upstate Neuroscience Research Building consolidated Upstate neuroscientists into one building, removing any divide in discipline to enrich collaboration and drive innovative research. Researchers seek to address some of today’s most pressing issues in neuroscience, such as behavioral disorders like ADHD, diseases of the eye, and neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. An expansion to the Institute for Human Performance added five floors of technology and lab space focused on biomedical research and patient rehabilitation. Research is aimed at advancing human performance and lessening the effects of disease, disability, and aging. View Site
Mental Health
The Richard H. Hutchings Psychiatric Center is a comprehensive, community based mental health facility operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Center has become an instrumental part of community mental healthcare, providing nearly half of the public health services of Onondaga County. The facility serves patients all over the Central New York region through their extensive inpatient, outpatient, adolescent, child, geriatric, intensive, rehabilitation, and other specialized treatments. The 136-bed facility treats an additional 1,300 outpatients through a system of clinical, residential, social rehabilitation, and vocation rehabilitation services. View Site

The Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center utilizes state-of-the-art technology to provide a full range of patient care services, education, and research. The Medical Center operates a 48-bed Community Care Center, providing a community day program, mental health intensive case management program, homeless veteran program, and vocational services. The Syracuse facility serves as the principal referral center for neurosurgery and urological renal stone treatment for veterans in Upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania and the nursing home is rated as one of the best nursing homes in the VA system nationwide. The Syracuse VA also provides primary and behavioral care in a 13-county area of Central New York through community-based outpatient clinics in Auburn, Binghamton, Cortland, Massena, Oswego, Rome, and Watertown. In June 2013, the Syracuse VA Medical Center opened a six-floor, 30-bed Regional Spinal Cord Disorder (SCI/D) Center with a therapeutic pool, expanded outpatient surgical services, a dialysis and infusion program, and seven new operating rooms.
