Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. It is a disease that typically affects older people, but it can occur at any age. Loss of vision is preventable if the disease is detected early and treatment is started.

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the layer of pigmented cells that supports the macula, the nerve found at the center of the retina that gives us our 20/20 vision, begins to show signs of wear and tear. With time small deposits begin to develop under the macula that not only decrease one’s vision but may allow blood vessels that normally reside behind the layer of pigmented cells to protrude through and become leaking. This is known as wet macular degeneration. The dry form has no bleeding. Use the provided Amsler grid to monitor your vision and notify your Eye Specialist immediately should changes occur.
Laser Eye Surgery
Cataracts
Our eyes are constantly exposed to sunlight and artificial lighting. Light transmission through the eye is what allows us to see. Light reflects off of an object and enters into your eye and then finds its way to the back of the eye. The back of the eye is called the retina and the central part of the retina is called the macula. The retina takes the light and converts it into neural impulses and sends those neural impulses to the brain which gives us our sight. There is more to light than just the visible light that we are able to see. There are smaller wavelengths of light called UV light that are not needed for vision and can cause damage to your eyes. Both long and short term exposure to UV light can affect vision and compromise overall eye health. The removal of these wavelengths from ocular exposure can reduce the risk of early cataract, macular damage and eyelid cancers.
Cataract Surgery
An after cataract, also know as a posterior capsular opacity, is a gradual clouding of the container (or capsule) that holds the implant in place after cataract surgery. The capsule was the structure that once held the natural lens in place behind the pupil. The capsule is opened on the front side to gain access to the cataract during surgery, while the back surface is left intact. It is the back surface that provides support for the implant.
Eye Exam
Most of us who have poor vision can remember the first time that we put on a pair of glasses and noticed the leaves in the trees or individual blades of grass. Children don’t recognize that their vision is blurry because they have never seen anything clearly. Because of this, it is important that children have regular eye exams to ensure that they are seeing their best. Screenings are done at school and your pediatricians office are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam by an Eye Care Provider as they do not address all the possible issues of the eye.

Autism
I am not only the wife of Dr. McKinney and mother to our 2 boys but I am also an RN. I have practiced in ophthalmology, in the hospital setting as a cardiac critical care nurse and most recently in promoting a program to help identify kids with developmental disabilities and autism with Family Network on Disabilities. I joined the practice to help evaluate and educate patients on specifics of Dry Eye Disease. I love to teach and feel privileged to be working at such a great office. In my spare time I volunteer at the our childrens’ school and volunteer with our church within our mission ministry that serves children in Guatemala.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
For children and adults vision screenings never replace a complete eye exam. Vision screenings are great for catching obvious eye problems but will miss a majority of eye conditions. Annual eye exams also help your children succeed in school. Many children who pass school vision screenings but still struggle in school may have other eye complications that only an eye doctor will be able to identify. Visual problems have also been associated with ADHD in children. Having annual eye exams give children their best chance to succeed not just in school but in life.
