Pediatric Care
I think the Amercian Academy of Pediatrics is wrong. It says that kids don't get infected with Covid easily, and they don't tend to spread Covid. I don't see any convincing data on that, and the Academy doesn't present any.
Ear Infections
Of course, get tested, both yourself and your family. To avoid false negatives, which can lead to tragedy, we recommend waiting 5 to 7 days from exposure if you have no symptoms, but test right away if you get symptoms. Since Covid can attack anywhere, any infectious symptoms including fever, diarrhea, undue fatigue, ear infection, sore throat and so forth count as symptoms too, not just the classic ones of cough and loss of smell or taste.
Family Practice
Dr. Fong provides a full spectrum of family medicine services, that is, medical services for patients of all age groups. (He does not, however, see children under six.) His patients range from the geriatric elderly with many complicated medical problems to males and females young and old. Being a generalist doctor, he can take most any problem patients present with and devise the appropriate actions to take, actions which may sometimes involve a referral to an appropriate specialty. He does routine physicals and routine gynecological checkups, and he takes an interest in musculoskeletal problems.
Emergency Care
No, call the doctor or have the doctor see you virtually first, unless you are really sick and you think it might be a life-threatening emergency. Why? Because we don't have enough test kits, and so we don't do what some of the Asian countries do, which is to test everyone with respiratory disease. Then of those who test positive, have public health trace and test all their contacts, that is, those who have contact <6 feet, >10 minutes, or got coughed or sneezed on. Then, of those who test positive here, again trace and test all their contacts. Then of the positive ones of those, again trace and again test all their contacts, and on and on until purblic health has tracked down and quarantined every single contact of every single person who tests positive. That is called eradicating disease, and a more humble term is "containment." We don't do that; we only do treating the ill. We only test those who are sick enough, and those who are not sick enough but who have respiratory infections and therefore could have Covid, we just tell them to go home, isolate themselves and rest, drink fluids, etc., just like for a flu. So if you go down to the hospital when you have a respiratory infection but you are not that sick, you might not get tested, yet you will risk being exposed to Covid or things like pneumonia just being in the emergency room. So call the doctor or have the doctor see you virtually first.

Even though the rates of death and serious illness have lessened with vaccination and Omicron, I would still recommend not getting Covid, and if you already had it, don't get it again. We still don't know

His family medicine residency was completed in 1983 at the same university. Fourth, when you have Covid, especially if you are asymptomatic, you can spread it to others. Wearing a mask, especially one of those cloth ones, is not going to protect everyone else from you, and your hands will spread the virus with everything you touch. Plus, the other members of your household will get it and they might all silently spread it to others. The chance of dying from prostate cancer, for diagnosed cases, is only 1.8%. The real death rate is way lower, since there are lots and lots of harmless prostate cancer that never get diagnosed, but would you like prostate cancer for yourself? Or if it could be spread, would you spread prostate cancer to your family and friends, especially the elderly ones, and to others even if they were only strangers?

But when it does become available for you, do get vaccinated. And don't get Covid. Again, we don't know what the long term side effects are. First, Covid can affect every organ, can get into every human cell. Second, unlike any other virus we know of, Covid causes widespread clotting, and that can give you silent or not-so-silent heart attacks and strokes. Third, there are maybe 10%, or maybe even more, of the people who've had Covid who are "long haulers", who get tiredness, brain fog, shortness of breath, etc., for months after, even though their cases may have been mild. Fourth, 60% of the people after Covid, and their cases don't have to be severe, we've found to have heart inflammation on MRI, and even with no symptoms that can't be good. Fifth, possibly there are long term brain effects from Covid.

When you get Covid, for up to the first 14 days even though you are quite contagious you have no symptoms. When you do get symptoms, in the 80% of the cases that stay mild and in the first stages of the 20% that eventually become severe, the symptoms are indistinuishable from most any virus and most any respiratory infection. You get a sore throat, a fever, a cough, diarrhea, tiredness, or a combination of those. So it's very hard to tell without a Covid test. When you are in the severe stage, then we can tell by the pattern of the pneumonia on the chest X-ray or CT scan. To prove it's Covid, however, we still have to do a Covid test, which can take days to get results.
