Insects and Spiders

Fleas

Ticks
Ticks are blood-sucking arthropods, both males and females take blood to survive and complete their life cycle. There are two major families of ticks include the Ixodidae or hard ticks, which have a hard outer covering called a scutum, and Argasidae or soft ticks, which do not have a scutum. Soft ticks typically live in crevices and emerge briefly to feed, while hard ticks will attach themselves to the skin of a host and feed for multiple days.
Mosquitoes
If you believe that you are having a problem with mosquitoes in your area, first ask yourself, “Am I being bitten?” There are many species of insects that are often mistaken for mosquitoes, but are harmless. You know you have a real mosquito problem if you are being bitten.
Flies
Despite their common name, crane flies do not prey on mosquitoes as adults, nor do they bite humans. The most common crane flies encountered by residents in our District are reddish-brown in color, have a body that is up to an inch in length, and long dangling legs. They are clumsy fliers and are attracted to light thus often enter homes. They are most active in the spring and early summer.

Mites
Many people may not know what “Vector Control” is or why it is important. A vector is an insect or animal that transmits a disease to other animals or humans. In essence, a vector is a carrier of a disease. Examples of common vectors include mosquitoes, ticks, mites and fleas.

Bacillus thuringiensis ) – A naturally occurring bacterium found in soils that contains spores containing toxins that specifically target and only affect the larvae of mosquitoes, blackflies, and fungus gnats. BTI has no toxicity to people and is approved for use in organic farming operations.

Midges can be a nuisance from April through September when adults emerge from the water and begin to swarm, these insects usually emerge at sunset and are attracted to light. They overwinter in the water as larvae and are generally found in the muddy substrate at the bottom of the water.

Crows
West Nile virus is maintained in a mosquito – bird transmission cycle, songbirds are important hosts for the virus and some species such as American Crows can become very ill and die following infection. Bird die-offs have been an important indicator of WNV activity in the United States. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) coordinates a WNV dead bird surveillance program that our District participates in from mid-April through mid-October. When a member of the public reports a dead bird to the CDPH website, the District is notified, the bird is collected, and tested for WNV. All residents who report a dead bird that tests positive for WNV are notified by phone and our encouraged to vigilantly avoid mosquito bites and potential exposure to WNV.
Magpies
If you see a bird, particularly a crow or magpie, lacking signs of trauma that has been dead for less than 24 hours, please call 1-877-WNV-BIRD ( 1-877-968-2473 ) or report it online here. Crows and magpies are particularly susceptible to the disease, so they make excellent early warning sentinels for virus activity in our area.
