Given the potential life threatening effects of gum disease, it is very important to maintain regular dental exams and cleanings. Your dental professional will provide periodic screenings for gum disease. If the presence of gum disease is detected, either non-surgical or surgical gum disease treatment will be provided to address and control the disease. There is no cure for periodontal disease. We must treat this condition and maintain your oral health to prevent the progression of periodontal disease.

Restorative

Crowns
Functional crown lengthening is needed in order to perform cosmetic or restorative procedures if a tooth is too far decayed, broken below the gumline, or has insufficient structure for restoration. In cases like this, the doctor will reshape the gums and supporting bone to allow for adequate room to place a high quality restoration.
Bridges
When a fixed bridge is placed, the bone under the pontic, or middle portion of the bridge where the tooth has been lost, has a tendency to sink and can affect the overall facial structure. Guided tissue regeneration can be used to repair the esthetics of the bone under the bridge, adding support for the facial structures to remain in attractive form.

Deep Cleaning
The general steps of scaling and root planing treatment may include a local anesthetic to numb the areas that will be treated. Your doctor may suggest a form of sedation, if necessary. The treatment often requires hand instruments and an ultrasonic tool to remove the plaque and calculus accumulation. Your doctor or dental hygienist will use the instruments below the gum line to clean the roots of your teeth and smooth any rough surfaces. The goal of this deep cleaning process is to clear away plaque and tartar as well as smooth the surfaces of the teeth to encourage the gum tissues to reattach to the teeth.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Piezosurgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone without damaging soft tissue using ultrasonic micro-vibrations. Developed for use in oral surgery, implantology, and periodontics, this innovative technology allows doctors to perform procedures that were not previously possible.
Jaw Surgery
Flap Surgery
Osseous surgery (or flap surgery) is performed on patients who have moderate or advanced periodontal disease. Typically, flap surgery is performed after scaling and root planing has been attempted but has not been successful in treating existing periodontal disease.
Gum Surgery
Gum recession is just one of the signs of gum disease, but can also be caused by using the wrong tooth brushing technique or as a side effect of certain medications that increase the risk of periodontal disease. Traditional gum surgery and some orthodontic treatments can also cause gum recession because healthy tissue has to be removed to eradicate the infection. The Pinhole Surgical Technique PST™ may be an attractive alternative to gum grafting because it is a non-invasive procedure. Unlike gum grafting procedures, there is no cutting of the gum tissue involved.
Osseous Surgery
In some cases the only way to treat the patient is Osseous surgery, the majority of patients chose the more comfortable procedure, LANAP®.
Tooth Extractions
There are two forms of tooth extraction: surgical and simple. The type you need will depend on if the tooth has erupted out of the gum tissue or if it is still below the gumline. Teeth which have erupted are removed using the simple technique. Those that remain below the gumline are removed surgically.
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation is a common procedure performed to help recreate the natural contour of the gums. Often, after a tooth is removed, the bone in the jaw will begin to deteriorate and recede. The height and width of the socket, which was supported by the tooth, will begin to shrink after the tooth is removed. Many patients will eventually develop an indentation in the gums where the tooth used to be as a result of tooth and bone loss.

General Dentistry
Dr. Thomas J. Miller II, (Dr. T.J.) grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He attended St. Francis DeSales High School and went on to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After graduation in 1986, Dr. Miller earned his dental degree from The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry in 1990. After completing his dental degree, he took an additional year of training at The Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, in a General Practice Residency program. It was during this year that Dr. Miller determined he preferred surgery to general dentistry. Dr. Miller earned his Masters Degree and Certificate in Periodontology from The Ohio State University in 1993.
