Dental hygienists are oral health professionals who focus on preventing and treating oral diseases in order to protect a patientâ€™s teeth, gums, and overall health. As part of dental hygiene services, those in the dental hygienist positions at our New York County Dental offices perform oral health care assessments that include reviewing patientsâ€™ health history, dental charting, oral cancer screening, and removing plaque and calculus from above and below the gumline. They also apply fluorides and sealants to the teeth to help prevent cavities.

Fillings
Evidence suggests that porcelain fillings can last for 15 to 30 years. The typical lifespan of a metal amalgam filling is around 15 years.
Resin Composite
Several dental filling materials are available. Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam, or tooth-colored, plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings.
Veneers
Porcelain veneers are an excellent way for patients to repair chipped, broken, or severely discolored teeth, as well as minor misalignments and gaps. The veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that the dentist affixes to the front of a tooth to cover its flaws. Porcelain veneers can change the shapes of teeth with natural-looking results, and they can also be used to correct severely stained teeth by giving them new, white surfaces matched by shade to complement surrounding teeth.
Crowns
County Dental frequently uses crowns to restore teeth that, while damaged, can function properly as long as their external surfaces are replaced. Made of tooth-colored porcelain or composite materials, dental crowns cover and protect cracked, chipped, broken, and badly discolored teeth and restore their shape, size, color, and functionality.
Bridges
The main reason you would need to get a dental bridge is if you have one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Leaving gaps between teeth unfilled can lead to shifting of the surrounding teeth, diminished chewing and speaking ability, and other problems, it is important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible.
Dental Bonding
In addition to dental crowns, dental bonding can improve the appearance of stained, broken, worn, crooked, or malformed teeth. Bonding can be used to quickly and easily change the shape and/or color of a single tooth or many. Simply explained, bonding involves placing a thin coating of plastic film on the front surface of teeth. Then a thin, putty- like bonding material is applied to the surface of the teeth and is sculpted, shaped, and color-matched to the patient’s teeth. After the new surface is smoothed out and completely polished, a high intensity light is used to help the bonding harden.
Restorative Dentistry

Root canal therapy is performed when the soft inner part of a tooth, known as the pulp, is injured or becomes inflamed or infected. The most common symptoms of damaged pulp include pain in your tooth, and swelling and heat in your gum. Our dentists at County Dental will examine the painful tooth and take X-rays to confirm the diagnosis.

Complete dentures, also called full dentures, can provide a lasting, comfortable solution. Your appearance and your health will benefit from replacing missing teeth. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag, making a person look older.
