Colonoscopy
You will be asked to sign a consent form at the time of the exam. The risks of colonoscopy are low (under 1%), but do include bleeding (which rarely can occur days later if a large polyp is removed), perforation, infection, tearing of the lining, aspiration, spleen injury, medication reactions and heart/lung problems. If you have any concerns about these risks, please contact your physician before your procedure. You will also be able to discuss this with your physician at the time of the exam.

Facilities and Resources: Huron Gastro is a private gastroenterology practice on the campus of a large community teaching hospital, Trinity Health St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. In addition to our own on-site endoscopy suites and infusion rooms, we leverage our proximity to the hospital for convenient access to a variety of state-of-the-art equipment and services that is available through the hospital’s clinical research infrastructure. This includes phlebotomy, specimen processing for shipping (IATA certified staff), -20/-70 specimen freezers, local laboratory tests, pathology, radiology, EKGs, and research pharmacy services. The hospital’s research pharmacy, staffed by personnel with Doctor of Pharmacy degrees (Pharm.D.), provides reliable 24/7 IP receipt and accounting, IP dispensing and compounding, and IP ambient/refrigerated drug storage. Additionally, for the convenience of our monitors, Huron Gastro has a designated monitoring area with internet/Wi-Fi capacity and a dedicated laptop computer with access to our electronic health record.

. Please let us know if you have diabetes. We will need your glucose reading the morning of your test (you can check it at home and bring your reading to the office—you cannot do the GEBT if your glucose level is above 275mg/dl that morning). You should not take another carbon-13-based breath test for 24hrs before your GEBT test. You will need to be tested for COVID-19 72 hours before your GEBT (regardless of your vaccination status). We will provide you with information on how to do this. You may want to bring a book, laptop, or tablet to enjoy during the testing duration.

Currently, our practice includes 21 physicians who are board-certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, 7 physician assistants, 2 nurse practitioners and many other clinical and administrative personnel.
Gastroenterology
Huron Gastro offers its patients timely access to advanced technology that is available within the field of gastroenterology. Our physicians are highly trained in all aspects of general and advanced endoscopic procedures, enabling us to provide our patients with both accurate diagnoses as well as safe and effective endoscopic therapies for a variety of digestive diseases.
Colon Cancer
Colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that uses a tiny camera attached to a long scope to examine the large intestine (the colon). It is most often used to screen for colon cancer with the goal of removing polyps (small growths) that could become cancerous in the future. With no family history of colon cancer, most should begin screening at age 45. Colonoscopy is also used to diagnose other digestive problems like diarrhea and bleeding.
Endoscopy
EGD, also called upper endoscopy, is an endoscopic procedure that examines the esophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It is used to diagnose and treat upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, upper abdominal pain, trouble swallowing, nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal bleeding. Conditions such as ulcers, inflammation, strictures and more may be found and treated during an EGD.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound-based elastography is a non-invasive test that helps assess the health of your liver. Specifically, it uses ultrasound technology to estimate the degree of fibrosis or scarring that may be present in your liver from various liver diseases or conditions. It also provides a measurement of fat deposition (steatosis) in the liver. This information is then used by your gastroenterologist to individualize and optimize your treatment plan. For some patients, ultrasound-based elastography can replace liver-biopsy.
MRI
The risks of capsule endoscopy are very low, but do include small bowel obstruction (the capsule lodges in the small intestine and causes a blockage) that may require surgery. You will need to avoid MRI machines until after the capsule has passed out of your body. If you have concerns about these risks, contact your physician before your procedure.
Radiology
Your liver biopsy will be performed by our radiology department. You will be brought to a procedure room where you will lie on your back with your right arm raised above your head. You will be asked to hold your breath while your liver is located with an ultrasound machine. You will be given an injection of numbing medication to that area. The liver tissue will be obtained through the skin using a hollow needle. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

She brings over 30 years of clinical and business leadership experience from a variety of settings including service-line program development for specialties such as bariatric and orthopedic surgery, acute stroke, and neurosurgery. She has also served as Administrative Director of Patient Care Services at various hospitals leading teams in clinical practice re-design, Journey to Magnet status, Lean and Six Sigma process improvement, and IT solution deployment. Marsha has a passion for the provision of excellence in patient care that is driven by a highly competent and compassionate staff.

Cyst
Ulcer
You will be asked to sign a consent form at the time of the exam. The risks of RFA are low but do include bleeding, infection, perforation, tearing, aspiration, medication reactions and heart/lung problems. Chest pain may develop after the exam, but this usually subsides in 1-3 days. A stricture (narrowing) or ulcer may also develop. If the stricture is severe, sometimes dilation (stretching) is required. Ulcers usually heal on their own or with acid-reducing medications. If you have concerns about these risks, please contact your physician before your procedure. You will also be able to discuss this with your physician at the time of the exam.
Lesions
EUS has a variety of clinical applications. It is most often used to carefully evaluate the pancreas for any signs of inflammation or cancer and to evaluate pancreatic cysts. Sometimes EUS is used to drain cysts. It is also used to biopsy concerning lesions in the abdomen that were identified by other imaging tests. Staging of various gastrointestinal cancers is also performed using EUS. Stones in the bile ducts, which may require further treatment, can also be identified.
