Glaucoma
The Kahook Dual Blade is a safe and effective glaucoma treatment that allows the surgeon to make precise incisions within the eye. In a normal and healthy eye, fluid moves through the trabecular meshwork, a pathway that eventually travels out of the eye and into the bloodstream. For patients with open-angle glaucoma, fluid does not drain efficiently from the eye, causing pressure to build up to dangerous levels (high IOP). The Kahook Dual Blade makes small incisions within the trabecular meshwork to allow for a more normal aqueous outflow, alleviating IOP pressure.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is a serious eye disease that can ultimately lead to blindness if left untreated. There has been a great deal of research into new medications and treatments for this disease, and the work has paid off. We can now treat wet-form AMD with VEGF-inhibitors, and dry-form AMD has a new implantable telescope in undergoing FDA trials.
Laser Eye Surgery
Photorefractive Keratectomy is a refractive surgery that is very similar to LASIK. Both LASIK and PRK use an excimer laser. Both can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Both ultimately produce identical visual results.
Cataracts
YAG stands for Yttrium Aluminum Garnet. These are the crystals used to generate the laser. This laser uses a focused beam of energy to make small openings in the posterior capsule to clear the clouded membrane that is creating posterior capsule opacity, commonly called a “secondary cataract” (even though it isn’t actually a cataract).

Eye Exam
Flashes and floaters are subjective. When they occur, an ophthalmologist conducts a thorough examination to observe the vitreous gel, the retina, and the optic nerve. A dilated eye exam takes less than an hour and provides a detailed view of these important structures. The doctor may also perform a quick test to measure the pressure inside the eye. In some cases, additional testing is performed to better understand the cause of floaters or flashes. All tests are explained in detail so patients know why they are being done and what they will show.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. The length of time a person has diabetes determines his or her likelihood of developing diabetic retinopathy. It is the most common diabetic eye complication and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. Diabetic retinopathy causes the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina, the light-sensitive lining in the back of the eye where vision is focused, to weaken, swell and leak, causing a loss of vision.

Many modern cataract procedures are conducted with the assistance of high-frequency ultrasound waves. These break up the protein clusters into small pieces so they can be gently extracted from the eye with suction.
